Wurr Page 35 by Paperiapina Wurr Page 35 by Paperiapina

Man! I don't think I've ever been this fast with drawing Wurr pages before. I mean, I just uploaded a new one the day before yesterday, and what's this? Another page! I got huuuuuge inspiration dose after my recent brainstorming session with *The-Vol, and our lessons yesterday were so... Umh, interesting (we went through exactly the same stuff about dramaturgy that I had studied in my previous school, Lybecker, and also studied independently for the sake of making Wurr). So I ended up drawing the whole day through. From morning untill 1.30 AM in the morning today. (Getting up TODAY after staying awake that long was... interesting.) My right hand and my back have been acting up this hole day today for crouching, but I dont care! I got a new paaaaaeeeeeg! 8D

Riega didn't like being drawn here. He looks all funny on this page. But on the other hand, I pretty much love everything on the left half of this page, so maybe we can forgive it. I personally am in love with the third panel. Iacar's face was so darn fun to draw! Mastering the angient art of facebending can be hard, but rewarding. (*insert old-chinese-monk-guy-type bow in here*)

Stripeyface is coming baaaaack! 8D I may draw the bastard again soon! If my hand feels like it.

(And I really, REALLY need a name for one of the three young dudes seen in the silhouettehoundglyphs in the first panel. The lowest one, with short legs. The too-many-legs one on top is Rummurr, and the right one is Mooseneck (Hirviniska for Finnish readers), but the only one who's name I actually need for the story is evading me. Darn!)

EDIT: Corrected a typo. Thanks for noting me!

Wurr (story, characters, drawings and stuff) are (c) to me, thanks.

So I'm re-reading Wurr, (partly because I'm inpatient, and partly because I'm having trouble remembering key plot segments) And can I just say the sixth panel, the shot of Crippled, is possibly my favorite shot of him, there's just something in the look in his eye, and the way his hair tuft falls that just adds to the drama well.

Just read the whole thing and I love this. Good blend of characters, humour and story. The faces are really expressive and I love the 'ancient' art. Really looking forward to the next page :)

i research a lot of different meanings of all kinds of names, it's hard trying to word in a different meaning, but i was searching and came across an old finnish name Paavo, now i don't know if it sounds like a hound name but it means 'small'

just trying to help

i follow your comic to the letter, i think the extremities of the hounds are wonderful, they all look so unique and i love Morri coz he is so tall, ^^
i have tried tons of times to create different species of wolf and dog and give them different deformities, but my imagination isn't strong enough at the moment btu your comic inspires me

I'm so excited! They're about to begin their journey out of the crater :D This has been a long time coming, but its finally almost here. Did you have any preconceived notion about how long this would take? Is it much longer than you orginally thought?

Nentraal is a word I thought I made up but apparently it is a word in a foreign language. Try as I may, I can't find a translation (google failed hard on this one). However, in one of the texts it was in, it mentioned a Belgian city, Brussel, but that was the only clue i could find. There are apparently a few different languages spoke in Belgium: French, dutch, german and flemish. The only dictionary I couldn't find on line for free that might have the answer is a flemish dictionary, and none of the others have a translation for that word. If you know anyone who speaks flemish, could you ask them for me? I'm pretty curious, though it might mean something completely unsuited to the character, i still wonder.

I thought of a new word, more suited to a hounds name, Kaylar, which is a type of Newfie dog (here's a website with what they look like [link]). Maybe you could turn it into a Newfoundland Corgi mix :D

Anyway, great job on the comic, can't wait to see more :)

Ah, name! I suggest:
"Oligakro"
or variants such as:
"Oligakr"
"Olgakr"
"Igakrol"
Basically because "Olig" means small or short in greek, and "Akro" means extremities (also in greek), it's silly but i like names with stories behind them (that is they mean something in another language, once belonged to a folk or legendary character, or have a personal story behind them).

Hmm, not bad names, I might consider some form of them. I usually am a bit wary about using names that mean something in a language that the reader doesn't know (in other words, names will be in Finnish for Finnish readers, and English names in English translation) since the world of Wurr is not the Earth we live in IRL. There isn't a place called Greece, so there isn't the Greek language either, or at least the hounds don't know anything about it and thus can't name their pups with it. But I have used names of legendary characters before. Ya know, Iacar's name is bent from Icarus, and I twisted his brother's, Dajamos' name from the myth of Icarus, using Icarus' father (since Icarus didn't have abrother I could use, and I kinda wanted to keep the same theme with the name).

Although I will keep your suggestion in mind. They might need some twisting around, but they aren't bad. Thank yous! ^^

Well, yeah, they are not supposed to mean anything to the characters, i find hidden-sense names are a private joke to the reader, but, hey! Feel free to use any name u want, it was just a suggestion. I'll love your anyhow, promise! ;)

Nice name, but it doesn't quite sound like a hound name. It would be a good name for a dog, but not really a hound. There are all kinds of nonsense rules for names in Wurr that make it rather difficult to just pick any name for the character.

You should name him 'Komodo' because if you look, he looks like a komodo dragon the way he is standing. Or is that just me?
Reply
:iconpaperiapina:
Paperiapina Featured By Owner Sep 26, 2009  Student General Artist
Thanks for the suggestion, but I can't use that name. The world of Wurr is different from the real world, and there is no place known as Komodo, and if there is a place where there are lizards like komodo dragon, it probably lives faaaaaar away in south, in a place where the hellhounds have never been to, and thus don't know anything about the reptile. You can't really name your own offspring after something that you don't know existing or have never even heard about. (And the character probably looks more komodo dragon like in the glyph than in the actual character. He's pretty fluffy and looks a lot more like welsh gorgi dog with raptor claws and no eyes than komodo dragon.)
But thanks anyway! ^^

How hard (or easy) is it to make an overall design for a character- not just the look, but the personality as well?
Reply
:iconpaperiapina:
Paperiapina Featured By Owner Sep 26, 2009  Student General Artist
It pretty much depends on several things. I usually like to say that my characters create themselves and I don't really have much to do with the process, I just put the results on paper. Sometimesit's just "BIM!" and the character is born ready, but sometimes it can take even months to design a character. Like Iralbe was one ofthise born ready, but Nightclaw, Iacar's late mate took almost a whole year before I knew exactly what kind of character she was.

Man! I really want to tee that movie someday. They showed it on TV once something like ten years ago, but I didn't see it from the beginning. I opened the television just in time to see suffocating rabbits which gave me nightmares for long time, but I've heard so much praise for the movie, that I want to see it again sometimes, and this time the whole movie, not just the nightmare fuel sequense of rabbits buried alive...
